FROM THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN From the Mississippi River: Merriwether Lewis spent 2 years walking to the Pacific Ocean. Pioneers spent 4 months riding horses to the Pacific Ocean. San Franciscans spent a week riding a train to the Pacific Ocean. When I was young man I spent 4 days hitchhikng to the Pacific Ocean. Today I spent 4 hours flying to the Pacific Ocean. This morning the EMail I sent to my uncle in San Francisco ... took a 4th of a second to arrive at the Pacific Ocean. It makes you wonder about all the things we're missing along the way that Merriwether experienced, and enjoyed, because he was moving so sloooowly. It makes you wonder about where all this acceleration is leading us and whether it will be worth all that we have lost in the long run. By William S. Jepson
